Spring Break Reading List (Bird Family Edition)

Spring Break is coming fast, and as every Mama knows, that means getting everyone ready — not just yourself. For us, part of trip prep is loading up the Kindles.
We’re driving for this one, and I’m secretly hoping I can find each Bird a story good enough to make them forget screens exist. (It has been known to happen.)
This Spring Break will be a little busy during the day, but we always protect our afternoons for relaxing and unwinding — and that’s exactly when the Kindle glow hits different.
Who’s Reading What This Trip
Mama — Romance girl. Trips are basically the only time I actually get to read.
Big Brother (11) — Will speed-run a series. I’m always hunting his next binge.
Sister (9) — Graphic novel girl, but Kindle isn’t always great for those… so I’m on a mission to find a “real book” that hooks her.
Little Brother (6) — Our newest reader… who sometimes pretends he can’t read because he likes being the baby a little longer. 😉
Papa — Courtroom drama, detectives, and epic fantasy. While I’m loading cozy vibes, he’s loading the heavy stuff.
Mama Bird’s Quick Vacation Reading System
I like options. If something doesn’t grab me, I want an easy pivot:
1 comfort read
1 “everyone says it’s good” pick
1 funny/light option
1 different-vibe backup
+ one physical book (because apparently I still do that sometimes 😅)
What Mama Bird Is Reading
During normal life, I try to read — but with three little birds and everything going on, I don’t get far. Trips are different. I read in the in-between moments: hotel wind-down at night, early mornings before the kids are up, pockets of downtime during the day, and (my favorite) the quieter cruise moments — lounger time, balcony time, and those “we’re all tired but happy” evenings.
Here’s what’s on my Kindle this trip (plus one physical book that snuck in):
A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR)
A Mountain Mama Bird recommendation. I started it a few years ago and stopped halfway when school started back up. She has fussed at me ever since because apparently I stopped right before it “gets real good.” I’m starting fresh — and she took her copy back because I had it too long without finishing it. 😅
Best for: fantasy romance with serious binge potential
The Grace Year
Also a Mountain Mama Bird recommendation. I checked it out from the library once and never opened it. She still insists it’s really good, so I’m giving it a real shot this time.
Best for: when you want something gripping and different from a comfort read
Pink Glass Houses
Recommended by my PTO president, who found it spot-on and hilarious. Not my top vacation pick (sometimes I want a break from anything PTO-adjacent 😅), but it’s on the list.📌 https://amzn.to/4cw4fz8
Best for: humor that feels a little too accurate
Dream Girl Drama (physical book)
I grabbed this at the airport last year — it looked like a fun romance. The downside: it’s physical, and I’m fully addicted to my Kindle where I can bump up the font and read in the dark. It’s apparently Book 3 in a series, so if it’s good… I guess I’ll have to go back and grab Book 1. 😅
Best for: easy romance, low brain power required
Long Live the Pumpkin Queen
I spotted this at Target, and The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite movies. It just feels like the perfect Disney-trip book to have on hand.
Best for: Disney vibes / spooky-cute mood
Big Brother’s Reading List (Age 11)
Big Brother loves to read and can almost always be found with a book in hand — physical book, Kindle, or manga. He’s deep in a light novel phase right now, and I already know he’ll be the one who finishes the most books on this trip.
I also fully expect him to ask for more books to load before we board the cruise, while we still have hotel Wi-Fi. 😅
His favorite vibe right now: an overpowered hero trying to live quietly, constantly underestimated… and then saving the day anyway.
Parent note: I try to stay aware of what he’s reading because some series shift more mature as they go. At the rate he reads, it can be hard to stay caught up!

Sister’s Reading List (Age 9)
Sister is a graphic novel girl and can be picky — but once she loves a series, she rereads it again and again. As long as she’s reading something, I’m happy.

Little Brother’s Reading List (Age 6)
Little Brother is just getting into reading — and up until now, he has successfully avoided it whenever possible. (I’m pretty sure he sometimes “forgets” he can read just to hold onto being the baby. 😅)
But Spring Break feels like the perfect reset. Now that he inherited Big Brother’s Kindle, we’re leaning into it.
Why this is easier than it used to be
We use an Amazon Kids account, which makes it simple to try age-appropriate options, see what clicks, and adjust fast. My goal isn’t perfection — it’s momentum.
What I’m going for
Short, easy wins he can finish quickly
Series options so if he likes one, we can keep going
Low-friction reading for the drive + hotel downtime (without a battle)

The Lincoln Lawyer Series — Michael Connelly
Fast-moving, gripping, and easy to jump into — perfect vacation pacing. We accidentally ended up on a cruise with our school principal two years in a row (somehow we only ever see him getting on and off the ship 😂). After that first cruise, he caught Papa in carpool and recommended The Lincoln Lawyer books. Papa got hooked fast.
